For online requests for passport verification, online cybercrime complaint filing, employee verification, and other services, the central government has launched the Digital Police Portal. The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems Project created and maintain the Digital Police Portal, which may be found at digitalpolice.gov.in (CCTNS). 13,775 police stations out of a total of 16,671 have access to the digital platform and can input all of the data into the software. Police and central investigative agencies would be able to search and report on offenders and crimes using the national database through the digital portal.   • Only authorized police personnel are allowed to search the Crime and Criminal data and reports to safeguard the privacy of the individuals concerned and for grounds of National security. The email will be used to reply to requests from citizens for criminal antecedent verification services.
  • The portal compiles information on recent and ongoing crimes that have occurred all around the nation. This data contains information on people who have been charged or found guilty in criminal cases, as well as information related to stolen or recovered goods, unaccounted-for persons, recovered or undetermined dead bodies, and other incidents. Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) Project

To connect all police stations under a single application software for investigation, data analytics, and delivering citizen services, the Ministry of Home Affairs came up with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) Project in 2009. As part of the “Modernisation of State Police Forces (MPF)” initiative, the Ministry of Home Affairs has been managing the Common Integrated Police Application (CIPA) project since 2004. This initiative aims to independently computerize criminal records kept in police stations.

CCTNS was created as a result of the realization that a national database of criminal records was required to aid in research and policy creation. The project has $2 billion approved to spend in total. The Central Government is giving money to States and UTs as part of this initiative for hardware, CCTNS software, connectivity, system integration, data digitization, project management, and manpower training. As part of the initiative, a national portal called the “Digital Police Portal” is being launched for States, Central investigative agencies, and Citizens. According to their authorization, they will have access to Searches and Reports on National Crime Records.

National Crime Records Bureau information (NCRB)

  • To provide the Indian Police with information technology solutions and criminal intelligence so that they may successfully enforce the law, the National Crime Records Bureau, an affiliated office of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, was founded in 1986.
  • In India, police departments began to be computerized in 1971. CCIS was launched by NCRB in 1995, followed by CIPA in 2004, and CCTNS in 2009. Approximately 15373 police stations and 6000 higher offices are connected with the CCTNS nationwide.
  • The NCRB produces and disseminates national crime statistics, such as those on crime in India, accidental deaths and suicides, incarceration rates, and fingerprints. Policymakers, the police, criminologists, researchers, and the media in India and abroad use these publications as their primary sources of reference.
  • When CCTNS is fully operational, it will also offer a variety of services to the public via the Citizen Portal, including the ability to search for a criminal or suspect on a national database.
  • Plans include connecting the police, courts, prosecution, prisons, and forensic labs into an interoperable criminal justice system (ICJS) to facilitate data sharing among the system’s multiple pillars.
  • NCRB has launched several IT-based public services, including Vahan Samanvyay (online Motor Vehicle Matching) and Talash (matching of missing persons and dead bodies). The Counterfeit Currency Information and Management System (FICN) and the Color Portrait Building System are two other programs that NCRB maintains (CBPS).
  • For posting Crime Statistics from 1965 on its website, NCRB just awarded the “Digital India Award 2016-Silver Open Data Championship” from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.
  • Through its training facilities in Delhi and Kolkata, NCRB also supports numerous States in the development of their capacity in the areas of digital forensics, network security, and CCTNS. A total of 16172 officers, including foreign law enforcement personnel, have been trained by NCRB through more than 877 training programs.
  • A national repository for all fingerprints in the nation, the Central Fingerprint Bureau was founded in 1955 and is also a part of the NCRB. It has a database of more than one million ten-digit fingerprints of criminals (both those who have been convicted and those who have been arrested), and it offers a search function on FACTS (Fingerprint Analysis and Criminal Tracing System). Soon, it is proposed to upgrade to NAFIS so that police stations can send fingerprint and fire query requests to NCRB online.
